The Beast

My approach with Hank here is that he’s a geneticist, first and foremost. Probably one of the few X-Men with an actual career. He gives lectures, conducts research, writes books, has a podcast, appears on the Daily Show, and, from time to time, saves innocents from danger. Just an extraordinary individual.

I gave him a standard X-Men uniform based on a mix of Jim Lee’s Jean Grey costume and Frank Quitely’s designs. I added a shirt and tie because he’d totally wear that. I figure if cops and James Bond can wear shirts and ties while running and making punches, so can Dr. Hank McCoy.

As for the actual beast-like appearance - Seven foot tall fur-less bonobo! More than any other X-Man, Hank is all about evolution so I figured I’d have his appearance be that of an overgrown pygmy love chimp. Keepin’ it in the hominid family. Also - No blue. Blue is for non-mammals. And Nightcrawler.

I am madly in love with your work, especially your redesigns, you make such drastic changes without making the character any less iconic or making them to edgy or different. n.n Also, have you done redesigns of Dr. Doom or Dr. Strange by any chance??

Green Lantern

This has always been one of my favorite concepts in comics. My take on the GLs is that they get their power from a macroorganism that isn’t even aware they exist. With that in mind I wanted to give them a biological look. The GLs are basically wrapped in a gelatinous layer of large cells. The GL symbol, which is constantly pulsating, is actually a composite nucleus. The cells’ energies are focused through the host species’ tool building appendages, which in humans would be the fingers. The ‘mask’ is actually a breathing apparatus that, in humans, grows out from the nostrils. It extends into the respiratory system and connects to the rest of the ‘suit’ through the pores on the chest.

My boy here is Kyle Rayner, the greatest of them all, as far as I’m concerned. Considering he’s a freelance designer/illustrator I wanted to give him a slightly disheveled look.

I have a big ol’ alternate Lantern Spectrum mythology in my brain that I might use for something else some day, a teeny bit of which can be seen here.

I’ve had a busy week, so this is a day late for the festivities.

Superman fascinates me more than any other single super hero, and possibly more than any other fictional character. This is due to a number of reasons, but a large part of it has to do with him being the ultimate immigrant. Anyway, I could talk about the guy forever, but I’m not gonna do that here. Ask me at a convention or at a bar and I’ll vomit my interpretation out all over the place though.

Thank you Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster for giving us such an enduring modern myth.

Alright, alright, if it wasn’t obvious already the Jimmy Olsen post from the other day was an April Fool’s Day prank. Charline wanted to do something special and I’d been wanting to draw something featuring the kid for a while, so there ya go.

I didn’t get to finish the second preview page in time for Monday, but here’s the whole dealie as it was originally intended to be seen.

The basic idea was that Jimmy would be stranded on a parallel Earth & rather than trying to find a way back home he’d just build a new life for himself. I drew the teeny character sketches at the end there immediately after I had the idea.

1) The United States of New France: This is basically my take on the American revolutionaries deciding to thank France for their assistance in the war for independence by modeling a new flag after France’s post-revolutionary tri-color. They wouldn’t actually be called “New France”, that’s just my name for the flag.

2) The United Territories of Australia: Pretty self-explanatory. Seven stripes for seven territories. I made the field red instead of blue because I just thought it looked better.

3) The United Kingdom of Britain, North Ireland, and France: Yeah, apparently this almost happened a few times. Anyway, I sacrificed a lot of individual elements associated with the countries that make up this UK in the interest of keeping the design relatively simple. The shade of blue comes from the Scotish Saltire, the green is for Wales, the red is for France, and the overlapping red saltire & cross are North Ireland and England respectively. I based the overall layout on France’s tricolor.

4) The Organization of American States: The stars are the Big Dipper, representing North America, united with the Southern Cross, representing South America. The unifying star is meant to stand out not only due to the fact that, well, it’s the unifying star, but also it geographically represents southern North America through northern South America, the general area where the Mayans, Aztecs, and Incas rose to prominence. It also represents where the Europeans first made contact. The gold represents original American empires, the red represents imperial European empires, and the blue represents the Pacific & Atlantic Oceans. This is the current actual flag…

Wonder Woman

My approach here was pretty simple - The Amazons have been Earth’s hidden protectors for centuries. They were the first humans to reach and transcend space. They’ve bartered with deities, extraterrestrials and alternate Earths. They’ve developed astounding technologies.

Diana is the greatest among them.

Also, I see the Amazons as what’s left of the Scythians, who were known for having female soldiers. Many artists focus on making Diana appear Greek, but I figure the Amazons were exotic foreigners in the old legends, so they couldn’t be Greek.
