Some folks have been asking me about my process, so I figured I’d dedicate a post to that…
Step 1 -
I begin with a sketch. Some are looser than others, depending on how clear the finished bit looks in my head. Since I draw such light lines I have to add markers on the corners of the image so that my scanner won’t fuck up & only scan what stands out.
Step 2 -
I make adjustments in either Photoshop or GIMP. In this case I felt the monolith & tree-like structures in the background should be bigger, so I enlarged the sketch layer. I’ll also completely redraw some things, or rearrange objects, as seen here with the placement of the word bubbles and … bleep indicators? Then I add the “inks” on another layer, switching between the regular & enlarged sketch layers for reference.
Step 3 -
I very loosely add colors, sometimes before I finish the ink layer. I do one layer for the character’s colors & another for the background. I often tweak the levels of red/blue/green & really just experiment until I find a color combination I’m happy with. Sorry I don’t have a screenshot of this. This layer gets replaced by the end. Here’s the cleaned up version…
Step 4 -
I combine the layers, add my signature, do a little cropping & that’s that!
